Geography

The major biomes of Bhel are tropical jungles, farmland, and coastal regions. The island of Bhel is approximately 100,000 km2, and is found to the south of the mainland Faran, due south of the isle of Kembire. Bhel is geologically active, possessing both tectonic movement and periodic volcanic activity.

Communities and Settlements

  • Krava – The capital of Bhel, and the only true city on the island.

Religious Institutions

Bhelians almost exclusively worship the patron god of Minotaurs, Visry. The submerged temple of Visry in Krava is one of the few places of worship for Visry, although offerings are usually made in his name before a sea-faring voyage and each village generally has one steer who is a trained priest of Visry for conducting religious ceremonies and rituals.

Societies and Organizations

The Seaborne is the name given to a few Minotaur Clans who lead vastly different lifestyles from the majority of the Bhelian Minotaurs. The Seaborne live their entire lives at sea, aboard their clan ships, and only rarely come to shore to engage in trade. Possessing close ties with the god Visry, the reclusive Seaborne Minotaurs are masters of the open sea and possess ships capable of great speeds and capabilities. The Seaborne Minotaurs are not known for the pirating and looting that some of the coastal Minotaur Clans of Bhel are, although this is a distinction that few foreign nations manage to grasp.

Languages

Common is the official language of Bhel, and almost every resident speaks it fluently.

Currency

Bhel uses the Faran Silver Standard, accepted as legal tender worldwide.

Governance

Bhel is a theocratically-regulated Dictatorship, where the First Chieftain rules absolutely and can only be challenged for the right to rule by Clan Chieftains, who in turn can only be challenged for the right to rule by one of the Sept Chieftains of the same Clan, who in turn can only be challenged for the right to rule by one of the Village Chieftains of the same Sept, who in turn can only be challenged for the right to rule by one of the uncastrated members of their village. As such, any uncastrated Minotaur is capable of one day ruling the nation.

The challenge for Chieftain leadership is known as the Holmgang, and is overseen by a priest of Visry to ensure its legitimacy. The rules are simple. No armour, a single non-magical weapon of choice (generally the traditional Minotaur weapon, the trident is chosen), no use of magic, and the fight is to the death.

Once a male Minotaur reaches the age of eighteen, they are given a choice. They may either voluntarily be castrated and remain a member of their village, sept and clan, choose to initiate the Holmgang and fight the current Chieftain of their village, or accept exile. If the Minotaur chooses exile, they are banished from the territory of the village and should they ever set foot there again it would immediately constitute a challenge of Holmgang to the sitting village Chieftain.

Relations with other nations

Bhel technically has open trading relations with Hestial. However, various minotaur village Chieftains hailing from remote settlements pay little attention to the decrees of the First Chieftain and prey upon the trading vessels found in Hestial’s waters. There is little love between these two nations.

Bhel engages sporadically in the slave trade with Yarfel, and the capital of Krava possesses a magical transport gate with Alnaz, the capital of Kardiam which facilitates trade with the economic giant.

Military

Bhel possess only a ceremonial force of land troops stationed in the capital of Krava, but can conscript a force of perhaps 10000 steers should the situation warrant it. Additionally, with most Minotaur villages possessing at least one ship with fighting capabilities, the navy of Bhel would be a force to be reckoned with, if they could ever be corralled into fighting in unison, a feat most agree would be next to impossible to accomplish.
