Excerpt from the Journal of Colewyn Flint

Somtimes I forget things.

I didn’t used to.

I’m going to start writing things down. Maybe it’ll help.

It’s the dragonfire. The Sosiety used to give me all I wanted. I’d sell what I didn’t use. It kept me sharp, and gave me cred among the other street kids. That’s what I thought, anyway. I think now the Sosiety just gave it to me to keep me tied to them. Now that I’m cut off from them, from home Alnaz.

I almost wrote from home. But Alnaz was never home.

Now that I’m cut off, I’m running low. I have whole weeks now that pass by in a flash. I can barely remember what’s happened to me. They tell me I lost my skin!? How could I have forgotten that?

I’ve been reading the spellbook I got from the circus in my spare time – so how come I don’t remember anything from it? Some spells would have helped in Jocund’s maze, surely. I let my friends down.

It’s time to kick the fire. I’m not a kid doing dirty work for thugs any more. I’m on the trail of a Godslayer. I can’t afford to miss anything. I can’t afford to forget my magic. I can’t afford to get my friends killed.

I wrote friends again. I’m thinking back to Alnaz – I guess I didn’t really know what a friend was, then. I thought I had them. But… Sly, Pincher, Maxi… they weren’t friends. They would have slipped a knife in my ribs if it meant a clipped copper from the Sosiety. And I’d have done the same to them.

These people, though… they’ve saved my life without a backwards glance. Many times. They look the other way every time I do something dumb, or let the dragonfire get the better of me. And I never relized how relieved I’d be when we found each other again after being split. I guess, if Alnaz was never home, then this Brotherhood is the closest thing I’ve ever had to one.

No more drugs. Keep practising your spelling, and your spells.

The Wreck of the Satisfaction

- With the four members of the party reunited in the city of Kleistead the party quickly discovered that the Brinson Salvage Company was closed for the next month while apparently on an expedition. Valmeer, Jim Frog and Shear reunited several weeks later as agreed, although Colewyn Flint’s was a no-show.
- Overhearing a confrontation taking place, it’s revealed that the Salvage Company’s possessions, including their archival information that the party was seeking, had been seized by the Moreta Bank due to the owner defaulting on a loan.
- The party offered to assist the company owner by manning one last salvage operation in order to raise funds to reclaim the company archives and assets.
- Meeting the next morning, the party met the owner, as well as an experienced sea-mage in his employ, and they travelled, out to sea, to the location where the ship The Satisfaction had sunk.
- Due to the sea-mage’s intervention the party grew gills and dove to the sea floor. The party encountered an Electrical Eel in the hold of the ship and made short work of it.
- In an attempt to bypass a Colossal Crab blocking the party’s passage on the Berth Deck, Valmeer broke through the deck above him only to discover a Dire Octopus occupying the entirety of the Upper Deck of the ship.
- Seizing Jim Frog, the Dire Octopus led the party a short distance away from the ship where they discovered what had been masterminded the various creature attacks, a Brain Coral, a telepathic yet immobile organism attempting to protect its realm from further incursions from the surface world.
- Choosing the diplomatic route the party managed to negotiate safe passage of the ship in exchange for promising to warn surface dwellers to avoid this site, and to take the contents of a sealed clam shell to the surface world, for reasons unexplained.
- The party managed to retrieve the object they had been seeking, the Petrel family’s lost Bill of Exchange, and surrendered it to the owner of the Brinson Salvage Company.
- The following day, with Colewyn Flint rejoining them, the party obtained the company archive records and discovered that The Gnomish Maid has not gone down in a storm, but had likely been attacked by slavers originating from the Stormhide Minotaur clan, originating from Bhel.
- Hearing the clam shell open, the party discovered, among other items, that contained within it was a coin, inscribed with a jester and the word Jocund upon it. Uniting it with the other two coins in their possession caused the players to once again feel a wrenching in their stomachs, and to experience a spinning sensation in their heads, all the while hearing the distant sound of laughter that they had heard once before.

The Bullfrog

Lars Jensen braced himself and with a grunt heaved the crate of beets into the back of his cart. His sun-tanned and calloused fingers kneaded his lower back and he caught himself breathing heavily. Lars shook his head. He could still remember the first time his Pa had let him load the cart to take the produce to town, and here he was, almost four decades on since the farm had passed to him, and needing to take a break after each crate.
Lars tugged his kerchief out and mopped his brow. If he didn’t leave soon he might not make it to Stamford by nightfall. Glancing up to the sun hanging low to the west, movement caught his eye. Bandits? Those damn kobolds and their ogre hadn’t roamed this far before…Lars gripped the side of his cart for a long moment, squinting into the setting sun until finally he breathed a sigh of relief. Not bandits, but sure as heck not from around here. Staggering and stumbling towards him was what appeared to be a minotaur, clad in gleaming armour, falcon perched upon his shoulder, longbow at his back, sword at his side…and his companion. Lars blinked.
Was that a Wildkin? One of those froggie-men? Damn, what were they called…Pryga? Lars had heard stories, but this was the first he’d ever seen. Granted, the stories also said they were primitives and wore animal skins, but this one seemed to have fine silken clothes, a crimson plume rising from his jaunty chapeau, and a flowing, luxuriant cloak. Lars tried to stand up straighter as the pair lurched their way to a halt before him.
“Good Sir…might we inquire as to our whereabouts?” The minotaur intoned in a rumbling baritone, blinking purposefully and trying to focus on the beet farmer standing before him.
“Oh. Well, you’re not far off from the village of Stamford.”
The Pryga produced a worn map from his satchel and consulted it briefly before shrugging up at his companion.
“By foot we’re less than a two days north of Kleistead. In the Alcede province of Kardiam?” Lars volunteered, sidling over and tentatively pointing towards the parchment held in webbed fingers.
“Ah, the village of Stamford, I see, of course, of course.” The green-skinned Wildkin murmured, nodding thoughtfully down at his map. Lars waited, but the Pryga only rubbed his chin some more, as the moment stretched on.
“Would you…like a ride to the village? In the back of my cart?” Lars offered. “I’m on my way there now to attend a town meeting.”
The minotaur, towering over him, bowed his head gravely and said, “We would be most grateful”.
Lars offered up a nervous smile.
Lars idly flicked the reins and spared a glance over his shoulder at the two odd figures sitting amidst his beet crates. Wouldn’t this be the talk to the village, two strangers come plumb out of nowhere. He might even be able to milk it for a free round at the tavern from the younger lads. Lars wasn’t sure when he changed from being one who plied stories from old farts with ale to being that grizzled coot around the fireplace, but he wasn’t complaining, it was hard to argue with the perks of the situation.
“Valmeer?” A voice came from behind him. A new and different voice. Lars jerked his head around and nearly dropped the reins. A ghostly apparition of a young adolescent, seen from the shoulders up, was hanging in front of the Minotaur, hovering a few feet above the ground and keeping pace with the jolting cart. Lars could see the winding dirt path through the phantasm itself.
“Where are you? Is Jim Frog with you?” The spectre asked, his gaze never leaving the bull Minotaur’s face.
“Jim Frog is here with me. We are well. We are very close to Kleistead, in Kardiam. What of you and Shear, where did you end up?”
“We didn’t go nowhere, them spell stones were duds. We’re trying to reach the border to Kardiam. We’re travelling all incognito-like with that circus we’d seen a few weeks back.” At this the frog-man straightened, and leaned over and began to shake the Minotaur’s beefy arm.
“The circus?! That means…Valmeer, tell him to get the blood! The cockatrice’s blood! Valmeer!” The minotaur (Valmeer?) made a placating gesture with his hands towards the Wildkin and addressed the translucent entity once again.
“Jim Frog requested you retrieve him a sample of the cockatrice’s blood. For his…condition.” Valmeer said the last word reproachfully, and looked pointedly at Jim Frog, but Lars didn’t think the Pryga even noticed.
“You got it. Listen, we’re a few weeks out from Kleistead, but we can meet up with youse guys there. Maybe we can figure out who done set us up for moider, and in the meantime we can check out that salvage company they tolds us about in Skepshire.”
“That is agreeable. Safe travels.”
“Back ’atcha.” And with that that incorporeal figure vanished, leaving Lars alone again with his two passengers, and his beets. Lars turned back around to face the road in front of him, and felt a grin growing across his face. One round? He thought buoyantly, they’d be buying him drinks for the rest of the season with a tale like this!
The last sliver of the sunset was visible as Lars hitched his mules to the post in front of the inn. He could hear the voices coming from inside, it sounded like the meeting was already underway. He motioned to his two peculiar finds and shooed them through the doorway. A shrieking voice greeted them, assaulting all those who could hear it.
“What I want to know is what is someone going to do about it?! These raids keep getting worse and worse, and those kobolds keep getting bolder! It was bad enough when they were just raiding our livestock and food stores, but now they’re starting to turn to violence. Sure, the healer says they’ll recover, but how long will it be before they take a life? It isn’t safe! What we need…” The flushed farmwife addressing the townspeople fell silent as she caught sight of the three figures at the entrance, and the gathered audience turned their heads en masse to them,
“They’ve sent another one.” A voice murmured from the congregation.
The Pryga cleared his throat, swept back his cloak, stepped forward and announced,
“I am Jim Frog. Where are your women?” But Lars suspected he may have been the only one to hear it, as the people surged forward to throng about Valmeer.
“Is it true, Brother Minotaur, have the Sons of Gatrius sent us another holy warrior to aid us in our time of need?” The mayor’s jowls quivered as he asked. Valmeer frowned at this and slowly and pointedly asked,
“Another? There is another Son of Gatrius here?” The crowd finally fell silent, and exchanged uncomfortable glances with one another until finally someone gathered their nerve.
“He arrived and told us that he had come to help us with the kobold bandits who have been plaguing our town. He left at dawn yesterday morn to confront them in the old mine that they’ve been holed up in but…he has not returned. We fear the worst.” The minotaur stood silently and considered this. At last he cleared his throat, and placing thick fingers around the golden sun medallion that lay around his neck, he announced to the hushed gathering,
“My honour and my faith requires that I help a fellow Brother in need. I know not if I must seek to avenge him or to merely raise him from adversity, but either way I will not return until Gatrius is satisfied. This I vow.”
Lars watched as the backs of Valmeer and Jim Frog receded into the darkness of the abandoned mine’s entrance. It was a warm dawn this morning, with the promise to be a real scorcher by midday. Lars had volunteered to show the two strangers the way to the mine before travelling back to his farm. It had been quite the night after the paladin’s pledge to the townspeople. There had been some apprehension, certainly, where one Son of Gatrius had failed before, why was there any reason to hope that this one could do any different? A pack of kobolds and their ogre leader was no small thing after all. The mood had been… tentatively hopeful? The frog had been trying to rouse everyone’s spirits, but there had not been much luck with that. That, in addition to Jim Frog being mistaken as Valmeer’s squire, had resulted in Lars learning exactly what it looked like when a frog pouted. Lars gathered the reins in his hands but hesitated. He had been warned to just drop them off and then get along home, after all if they failed there might be some angry kobolds who would be none to pleased to find someone waiting outside their encampment. Lars clucked his tongue at his mules and navigated to behind some shrubbery so that he could watch the entranceway from a slightly more hidden position. After all, he told himself, you can’t put a price on a good story.
The sun’s position made it well into mid-afternoon. Lars had begun worrying hours ago. True, the mine was an immense and sprawling complex, but wouldn’t you have thought that they would have returned by now? For the tenth time Lars reassured himself that he’d wait just another few minutes, and then be on his way. Lars cocked his head, sensing something that he couldn’t quite place his finger on yet. But now he was sure of it, someone or something was coming out of the mine’s entrance. In fact, Lars was fairly certain he had heard Jim Frog’s voice. Feeling decades younger he trotted over to the entrance to commend these surely triumphant heroes, only to spring back as a horror emerged from the mine mere yards in front of him. Gnashing teeth like daggers, a scaly hide, a lashing tail, vicious claws and cold, soulless reptilian eyes greeted Lars as the beet farmer cowered in fear. Seconds passed before he realized that the beast had made no move to attack him. Raising his head, Lars finally noticed an exultant Jim Frog sitting astride this monstrosity, his froggy face split into a wide grin.
“His name is Byron,” he announced triumphantly. “He’s my new pet.”
The minotaur appeared at Jim Frog’s side. “We should talk about that.” Jim Frog pretended not to hear and petted the beast’s side affectionately. Gathering his wits, Lars finally noticed that trussed up in rope, and restrained firmly in the minotaur’s grip was a cowering kobold.
“Oh” said Lars. “Er, what about the rest of them?” The minotaur gazed appraisingly at the kobold before replying.
“He’s the only one who survived.” The kobold sniffled at this. “I intend to see him brought to justice and tried for his crimes against this community.”
“Oh. Oh my. And your Brother? Is he…I mean, did he…?” Lars was unsure of how to ask if the first Son of Gatrius was still alive, and startled when a hand came to rest on his shoulder. A haggard-looking middle-aged human in torn,dirtied and bloodied white robes stood beside him, grinning tiredly.
“Thanks to my Brother Valmeer” the stranger said, “I will live to serve Gatrius and continue to bring his light to the world.” He wobbled suddenly, and Lars hastened to escort him to his cart to rest. And as the entire band made their way back to Stamford, Lars kept thinking to himself, with no small amount of glee, people will be wanting to hear this story for years to come.

The Boy, The Bird and the Big Top

- When four Spell stones purported to be charged with Teleport Spells were used by the party Valmeer and Jim Frog were whisked away to a foreign land while both Shear and Colewyn Flint’s stones resulted only in the sound of laughter.
- Shear and Colewyn Flint managed to avoid discovery from Sir Lannet Dunlowe and his squadron of lancers, who are charged with bringing the Brotherhood to justice (for a murder they did not commit!), by joining the Starlight Dreams Travelling Circus.
- Alongside Gelda, the gnomish circus accountant/odd-job-jack, they were tasked with figuring out who had killed Garret Vidal (the former keeper of the circus bestiary) by locking him in the Sand Drake cage.
- Shear and Colewyn managed to be successfully smuggled out of Hestial and into Kardiam.
- Various items and valuables go missing, but questioning the carnies and performers leads to few answers.
- Gelda appears to be framed for the theft of a significant amount of gold when a sack of it is discovered on the roof of her wagon.
- Waking in the night to screams of terror, Shear and Colewyn first notice that both the Salamander and Powrie are missing from their bottles, and that the Powrie bottle had a false bottom, meaning it had had the ability to come and go as it pleased. The Salamander has set fire to a wagon, and inside clowns are trapped by the rising flames. Shear and Colewyn manage to rescue them and defeat the Salamander.
- Suspecting a diversion, Gelda remained on alert at her wagon, and thus was present when her key to the Sand Drake cage was stolen by the Powrie.
- Gelda, Shear and Colewyn Flint arrive just as the Powrie was releasing the Sand Drake from its cage. After a brief struggle they manage to contain the Sand Drake to its cage as well as trap and mortally wound the Powrie.
- It was revealed that the Powrie was in fact being possessed by the entity of the third bottle in the bestiary, which was in fact exactly that it had been purported to be, a developing demon embryo, who referred to himself as ‘Mahrqe’. This demonic minion implied that his master, the Demonic Prince of Discord known as Baelkriez, had purposefully targeted this time and place, because he possessed an interest in the Brotherhood (for reasons yet unknown).
- Shear and Colewyn Flint race to secure the third bottle, only to arrive too late, as the embryo had fulfilled its maturation, sprouted wings, and flown off into the night.
- After bidding farewell to the circus, Shear and Colewyn Flint are confronted by Sir Lannet Dunlowe, who vows to bring them to face the king’s justice if they ever set foot in Hestial again.
- Using Mage Guild Gate Tokens (cutting weeks off of their travel time), gifted to them by the circus ringmaster, Shear and Colewyn Flint travel to Kleistead directly from the city of Balkwold, and meet up with Valmeer and Jim Frog.

Seven Tears

Having arrived in the city of Skepshire the party set about gathering new armour, weapons, supplies and information. They discovered that the “Gnomish Maid” had been a ship that had last set sail from Skepshire twenty years ago, before its wreck was found off the coast of Kleistead, a city in western Kardiam, presumably with all crew and passengers lost to the sea. However, it appeared a salvage operation had taken place, and that more information could possibly be gained by visiting the Brinson Salvage Company in Kleistead.

Upon arriving in the town of Lacrima the party quickly discovered Estat Tower, and were escorted by the guard Callum Finn down into the dungeons where they met the Duchess Anabelle Estat and her Sheriff Otis Bracket. It was revealed that rather than being asked to investigate the disappearances of townspeople, now five bodies had turned up, skinned with supernatural precision, and everyone who had been missing before had apparently returned. The party was deputized and put in charge of the investigation.

The party interviewed and questioned many townspeople of the course of the following day, but didn’t seem any closer to discovering a common link between the bodies and the previous disappearances. That evening the party divided to keep watch over as much of the town as possible. Jim Frog had been put in charge of looking over the tavern, and offered to assist the server May Sadis in escorting the shopkeeper Wes Coden back to his residence, as he was extremely inebriated. While doing so the drunk Wes Coden admitted to Jim Frog that he had stolen his current fortune from Nadine Valus, currently a maid of the Duchess, by pretending to be smitten with her before getting her to sign over ownership of the general store. Enraged Jim Frog swore that once Wes Coden was sober he would duel him for the lady’s honour and do his best to end Coden’s life. Despite this revelation Jim Frog made sure to get Coden home safely.

Shear, in one of his gliding surveys of the town, had discovered a hidden nest along the cliffside of the town, apparently abandoned, but still containing one last egg. He helped with the hatching process and discovered he was now the sole caretaker for a gryphon hatchling. Shear swore to raise it as his own, and doted upon it with much affection.

Tired from their stake-out, the party decided to sleep through the morning, as all the previous disappearances had occurred in the evening. Woken by and enraged Sheriff Otis, it was revealed that a guard had discovered Wes Coden’s skinned body that very morning, not hours after Jim Frog had sworn to end his life. At this point the pieces started to fall together for the party, and the common link of all the disappearances to Nadine Valus was discovered. All the men who had disappeared so far had wronged Nadine in some way. The first, Petar Pescor, had left her for another, many years ago while they were both in their teenage years. She had been raped by Koby Erman, while she was being courted by his brother Bale who then sided with Koby in the aftermath. Victor Tessare left her with child, Callum Finn had beat her, and Wes Coden had stolen from her under the guise of caring for her. With Wes dead, the party knew of only one other man who had hurt Nadine, Drew Manus, the Duchess’ steward, who had broken off his engagement to Nadine only months prior.

The party ordered that a search be put out for Drew, and Nadine, and Callum Finn who was the one who had discovered Wes’ body. Drew was found and held in custody for his own safety, while Nadine was discovered at the shrine to The Widow, a goddess of loss and grief, overlooking the sea, a place where she had come to pray many times before. Her story seemed to indicate that she had not knowingly had anything to do with what had recently occurred in Lacrima.

Alarms were raised as an attempt was made on the life of Drew, and giving chase into an underground cavern the party discovered the culprit. Currently wearing the skin of Bale Erman was a Selkie, summoned inadvertently by Nadine Valus as she prayed at the altar of The Widow and wept seven tears into the ocean, tears of loss, or fear, of betrayal, of grief, of pain, of despair, and of rejection. An ancient and forgotten ritual completed, the Selkie came to Lacrima to give closure of a sort to Nadine by taking the skins of those who had hurt her, wearing those skins, and then admitting their crimes to her.

Having revealed his intentions to the party, the Selkie’s claws extended from the fingers of Bale Erman’s skin and attacked. Colewyn Flint tried to defend himself but failed, and was flayed alive before his horrified companions. Amazingly, Colewyn Flint managed to fight through the unimaginable pain of being skinless and remained upright. The fight was bloody, but soon enough, unburdened of his limbs by Shear, the Selkie was vanquished. Colewyn Flint replaced his skin, wearing it like a change of clothes and found himself restored, with not a mark upon him.

The Duchess was immensely grateful for the efforts of the party, and true to her promise gave them each a payment of $1000. As well, the party was given the Selkie’s Pelt, an object that allows the wearer to assume the form of a seal.

The celebration was short lived however, as Edvun Bairain, steward to Baron Haveli Vilkas of Granite Hollow made an appearance, having ridden like mad for days to reach the party in time. Apparently a squadron of knights, dispatched from the capital of Haveed, and under the command of Sir Lannet Dunlowe, a Major in the Hestial military, had arrived in Granite Hollow, seeking to arrest the party for a murder committed on July 14th 10,162 A.E., a day before any of party members had met one another. Bairain had set out to warn the party, but the squadron could not be far behind him, even now. The party’s likeness had been relayed to harbourmasters, the Mage Guild, and border guards, and a bounty of $2000 per person had been placed upon their heads.

Bairain offers a solution to the party, four Spell Stones, containing the spell Teleport, which should allow the party to escape beyond the borders of Hestial, until the Baron and Bairain could contrive of a way to clear the party’s name. Bairain had obtained these Spell Stones from a disreputable source, and is not sure where the spell will teleport them too.

The party confers briefly, and decides to take the chance that these stones offer. Simultaneously they hold the Spell Stones, and crush the enchanted gemstones in their fists, releasing the spell contained within. Jim Frog and Valmeer feel a wrenching in their stomachs, their heads feel like they are spinning, and as they look around them and take in their new surroundings, one thing is immediately obvious, Shear and Colewyn Flint are nowhere to be found.

Road to Betrayal: Part Two

With revelations and visions fresh in their minds from the Starlight Dreams Traveling Circus the party continued their way westward along the Trader’s Road. Their route was disrupted with the discovery that the Valston River Bridge was temporarily closed, and the wagons set of into the forests of the north in order to bypass it. Soon after Yehuda decided to turn back in order to deliver his cousin PacioPacio to a healer, as it appeared the injury he had sustained at the circus had lingering effects.

Traveling onwards with the elderly Fyrn, the party has an unpleasant experience in the village of Merriwald when Dryden Lectus, the shopkeeper of the general goods store refused to sell his goods for what the party deemed to be a fair price. Tempers flared and the situation escalated quickly, until at last, at great personal financial cost to himself, Shear managed to negotiate peacefully with the townspeople, although the party was forbidden to ever return to the quiet village of Merriwald.

While making camp on evening the party encountered a humanoid being made of wood who appeared to be pilfering silverware from the wagons. Upon confronting it the party was beset by both plant and wildlife, until the creature was vanquished. Shear managed to retrieve an acorn that Colewyn Flint confirmed contained magical properties of some sort.

Reuniting in Corfield with Yehuda and Pacio, the party traveled onwards, turning south across a different bridge and getting ever closer to their destination. As the party made camp one evening they noticed Yehuda acting odd, electing to take the sentry watch that evening, something he had never before volunteered for. When the party observed him in secret that evening they discovered him meeting with cloaked figures in the woods, and delivering some of his cargo, known to contain the smuggled drug Zephyr in exchange for money.

The party confronted him, and engaged in combat with Yehuda, Pacio and the three cloaked men from the woods. Soon Yehuda lay bloodied and beaten, and it was revealed that he had been selling the drugs for a personal profit, while telling his supplier, the ominous Penumbran Society, that the goods had been taken in bandit raids. Yehuda then revealed to the party that Colewyn Flint had been acting as an informant for the Penumbran Society, and that the only reason he had been in Granite Hollow had been to lie in wait for Yehuda. The party spared Yehuda and Pacio’s lives and sent them off to survive the wrath of the Society as best they could. The party burned the cargo of the drugs of Zephyr and then made haste to Skepshire, where the wagons were entrusted to the care of Fyrn, to whom they then bid farewell.

After almost two weeks upon the road, the party had arrived in the city of Skepshire.

Road to Betrayal: Part One

The long days upon the Trader’s Road have given the party new challenges and new opportunities to grow. Little by little they are learning what it takes to be a working soul upon the road. Their new employer and companions in the wagon train appear to be more than meets the eye, and no one is quite sure where loyalties lie.

Four days have passed, and according to Yehuda they have been making good time so far. The Starlight Dreams Traveling Circus camped in Corburn had some surprises in the store for the group. Who knows what lies ahead for the party in the miles ahead down the road?

Road to Betrayal: Prelude

With the adventure of the Bones of the Baron behind them, Colewyn Flint, Jim Frog, Shear, and Valmeer Ironhorn have found that they have become minor celebrities in the small village of Granite Hollow, due in no small part to their efforts in managing to repel the dark force that had descended upon this community.

Despite being welcomed with open arms into this society, something seems to be missing. The need for something more tugs at each one of them. And it is with great relief and anticipation that the four comrades received the news that the Baron has requested their presence at his estate. Perhaps, as promised, he’s been able to locate some work more suited towards their abilities…

Colewyn Flint’s report to the Penumbran Society

Day I
